The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
