Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
