The direst potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by researchers, encompassing a blistering 4C increase in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. An alternative projection envisions a drop of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy needs.
Credible Events, Not Forecasts
These consequences, certain ones are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as improbable but possible. The researchers explained that these scenarios filled a gap in planning that had left the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.
"The climate extremes we have outlined should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," commented the professor who oversaw the study. "Britain has been formulating policy lacking the frameworks to test against extreme possibilities. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Scenarios
Another collection of severe models details the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be three times normal levels.
The likelihood of the catastrophic events happening remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be taken to address global warming and how the planet's climate will behave. This analysis was likened to defence planning or stress tests for the banking sector.

- Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation fails or if strong feedback loops such as the Amazon basin perishing unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and dry spells affecting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A key circulation system, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would struggle enormously and water supplies would be drastically changed," explained Arnell.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if glaciers in the polar regions collapse rapidly, inundating low-lying areas. Differing from the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by infrastructure experts.
- Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from fossil fuel combustion scatter solar radiation from warming the ground.

These dire projections could be utilized in planning the building of major projects, such as housing developments, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Knowledge about these climate risks could also accelerate the transition to cut carbon pollution.
The analysis developed the worst-case scenarios using a combination of real-world events, climate models and scientific theory. These outcomes exclude international cascading effects like the global food shortages and resource wars.
This work was initiated as part of a official climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have cautioned that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
An independent advisory body has recommended that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the threats for severe warming. Past policy documents have been criticised as being "inadequate" by certain experts.
