New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly after his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
