New York Launches Reporting Tool for Citizens to Share ICE Videos After Arrests of Four American Citizens
New York state attorney general has launched a new digital platform asking citizens to submit visual evidence of ICE operations across New York. This move follows a day after a significant ICE raid rattled NYC's Chinatown, triggering mass outcry.
American Citizens Held In Raid
A US congressman disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were arrested and held for "about 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Protests occurred in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents deserves to reside free from terror," the attorney general stated in a release.
"If you witnessed and captured federal operations recently, I urge you to provide that footage with us. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The portal includes spaces to send photos and videos of the operation, plus a area to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, submitters must check a box that confirms that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The enforcement action, which onlookers say included more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known area of Manhattan where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are regularly available in large quantities – often to visitors.
Footage of the operation show several hooded and equipped federal agents securing and holding a individual, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of residents pursued the agents down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was also seen rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
During a news conference organized with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be arrested for no reason." He noted the persons were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to bring in the military to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the federal action rapidly grew – each of the mayoral candidates denounced the operation, as did NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration opts for oppressive displays that generate terror, rather than security. It has to end," a contender stated.
New York City immigrant rights groups voiced concern as well.
"ICE raided Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and riot gear to focus on local sellers working to survive. This raid had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and areas," said the head of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines prohibits the holding of citizens and the bureau has said it does not arrest or detain citizens. Yet, independent reporting has found that numerous American nationals have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the start of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide recently.
An October operation in the city center was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Demonstrations targeting immigration enforcement are widespread including claims of violence and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a letter provided by legal entities stated medical neglect of women with child in ICE facilities.
