The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has stepped down as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a legal ruling that questioned her legal standing to occupy the role.
Acceptance of Resignation
The head of the Justice Department, the Attorney General, announced her stepping down on Monday. In a statement that the appeals court finding made it unworkable for the official to effectively run her office.
"Let no one confuse adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "My fight will now extend throughout the nation."

Her resignation comes a week after a US appeals court determined that she had been serving in violation of the law as the federal prosecutor. This decision is likely to affect numerous prosecutions in the Garden State.
The judicial panel ruled that a temporary posting that skirted confirmation by the US Senate violated the statute on vacant positions.

The Attorney General added that she will remain at the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. She will seek further review of the ruling, in the hope of achieving a overturned decision.
Writing online, Bondi wrote that judges "should not be able to override the executive's selection of prosecutors responsible for carrying out the executive branch's core responsibility of prosecuting crime."

The 41-year-old attorney, first joined Trump's personal legal team in 2021. Subsequently, she acted for Trump in his hush-money trial in 2024, when he was guilty verdict on dozens of charges of financial record manipulation.
Prior to assuming the role of US Attorney, Trump had announced he was selecting her as his White House advisor during his second administration, describing her as a steadfast ally and a "tireless advocate for justice".
