Jurgen Klopp says a return to coach Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that rejoining the club remains something that could happen. Klopp, post a game-changing nine-season tenure which brought continental glory and the Reds’ first league title since 1990, has since taken on roles in a global football capacity for Red Bull and as an advisor to Germany's league body.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
The club claimed the league title in the previous campaign, but many fans holding him in high esteem would embrace the notion that he may eventually return. During an extensive chat, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I won't manage another team on English soil. Therefore in case it's my former club...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“I’m 58, which suggests I might decide down the line, I don’t know. Is a decision required immediately? Then I will not coach again. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I'll wait and observe how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on what circumstances would have to unfold to draw him back to the dugout, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I'm not entirely sure, I love what I do right now,” he stated. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing during downpours for lengthy sessions; I don’t miss going to media briefings repeatedly each week or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, yet sharing a meal with the players enjoying conversation, I appreciate that. We won a lot of games thus frequently positive atmosphere around the place. Remaining with me is Van Dijk's laughter in my ear as an instance.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly for his successor, crediting him for the tweaks which secured the championship last term. They've been defeated a string of losses across various tournaments following significant transfers, yet he dismissed the suggestion that it might signal a slump.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if you use the wrong words. An outstanding player. The French striker, superb talent. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. Fans shouldn't fret regarding the Reds, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
The manager expressed deep feeling regarding the passing of Jota, a player he signed during his tenure, along with the consequences for the team. The Portugal international was killed in a vehicle collision with his brother this past summer.
“Who can fill the void of somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond his on-field talent, it's his character. I can’t imagine the dressing room absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A profound tragedy for the entire squad as well. Nobody at Liverpool would cite it to justify results but it is the situation. You walk in a dressing room where his spirit remains. Dealing with that on a personal level is challenging. Overwhelming.”
