Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
