Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Built On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily built on promises to tackle rising crime and significantly reduce immigration.
He frequently blamed immigrants, notably the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to depart before the inauguration or face removal.
His proposals included Trump-inspired measures such as building camps, barriers, electric fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northern border.

Nevertheless, other experts also frame it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left and right administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Strong Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast will not command an clear majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are grouped together.
