British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
