Cameron Norrie earned the most important win of his career by coming back from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win signifies Norrie's initial win over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Massive. So big for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest British man in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the most significant success of my professional life, my first win over the global number one and probably the most confident player in the sport right now."

The British player, seeded No 31, also halted Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which represented the top run of results in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

Game Overview

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to success at the start as he eased through the initial stanza. Yet, Norrie slowly battled back back into the game by executing with sharper placement and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, physical rallies. His relentless steadiness and reliability slowly left its mark.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old looked notably struggling striking his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for much of this year, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, Norrie presented Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, keeping up his reliability, physicality and penetration the entire contest while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to advance inside the baseline and attack well.

Career Background

After dealing for a long time due to a serious arm issue and challenges with his performance, Norrie slipped as far down as No 91 this season. Following appearances in the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam second week subsequently, this win reinforces the veteran's improvement as he attempts to come back to the world's top twenty and beyond. Alcaraz, despite his remarkable achievements, is still hasn't master how to deliver his finest performance indoors.
